I have a mid-2010 macbook pro running Sierra 10.12.3. I am having several problems with speed..startup, opening apps, using apps, you name it. I ran first aid in disk utility and it reported a problem needing repair, so I rebooted in recovery mode and ran first aid. I got the error 'First aid process has failed. If possible backup the data on this volume.' It seems from other discussions that the next step is erasing the hard drive and reinstalling Sierra. I have everything backed up to time machine. But my question is, will doing this erase, then reinstall, then restore from time machine simply reintroduce the same problem? Is there a way to even know this? Is there anything else I should try before doing this?
